Wstęp
Melanorosaurus to rodzaj zauropodomorfa, żyjący w późnym triasie na terenie obecnej południowej Afryki.
Etymologia
Choć Haughton[4] nie wyjaśnił pochodzenia nazwy Melanorosaurus, tłumaczy się ją jako "jaszczur z Czarnej Góry", z greckiego melano oznaczającego "czarny", oros (góra) i saurus (jaszczur). Nazwa ta odnosi się do miejsca znalezienia - góry Thaba 'Nyama w RPA[5].
Filogeneza
Melanorosaurus readi to według większości badań jeden z najbliższych zauropodom[6][7][8][9] (jeśli jednak Prosauropoda to grupa monofiletyczna, jest on jej przedstawicielem[1]). Cały (patrz niżej) lub część jego materiału może tak na prawdę należeć do euknemezaura[10].
Budowa i paleobiologia
Melanorosaurus żywił się roślinami. Jego ciało było duże i ciężkie, a kości kończyn masywne. W 2007 roku opisano kompletną czaszkę okazu NM QR3314 - była ona raczej prymitywnie zbudowana - trójkątna w widoku z góry i długa. Kość przedszczękowa zawierała 4 zęby po każdej stronie a kości szczękowe miały po 19 zębów[6]. Do niego należała też opisana w 2007 roku kompletna kończyna przednia, która miała zarówno prymitywne cechy zauropodomorfów, jak i zaawansowane cechy zauropodów. Jej budowa sugeruje, że Melanorosaurus poruszał się na czterech nogach, lecz lokomocja mogła nie być wyłączną funkcją kończyn przednich[11][7].
Materiał kopalny
Opisanych jest kilka okazów, lecz może być ich więcej[1][12]:
- SAM-PK-K3449 - kości kończyn;
- SAM-PK-K3450 - fragmentaryczne kości kończyn;
- ? SAM 3532 - kręgi i kości kończyn, mogą nie należeć do M. readi[11];
- NM QR1551 - dwa duże osobniki, z których jeden jest nieco masywniejszy[13]; zawiera okaz typowy "Roccosaurus tetrasacralis"[12][14][15];
- NM QR3314 (zob. rys.) - artykułowany, dość kompletny szkielet niedorosłego osobnika, zawiera praktycznie wszystkie elementy ww. okazów.
